A glossary for money, in plain language

Finance has a dialect that treats newcomers like they arrived late. You did not. You were busy learning other languages. Here are a few money words without the usual tone.

Words worth knowing once

This is not a textbook. It is a short list so the next article, reading, or statement is less foggy. Nothing here is advice about what you should buy, sell, or hold.

Fluency is optional. Clarity is kinder.

Read what you need. Skip what you do not. A glossary is a reference, not a course you have to finish.

You can know the word without joining the culture.

A few starter definitions

Cash flow is money in and money out over a stretch of time. Discretionary is the part that was not rent, debt, or groceries. Net is what remains after the obvious bills. None of these words require a personality change.

Keep these four nearby

  • Income: what arrived, not what you hoped would
  • Expense: what left, including the pretty ones
  • Saving: money you did not spend, sitting somewhere
  • Debt: money you already spent that still has a bill

What we will not define as destiny

Credit score, net worth, and investment return are real terms in the wider world. We will not use them here to promise an outcome. If you need those explained for a decision, ask a licensed professional.

Educational on purpose

This glossary is for literacy, not for trading. A money reading uses plain questions, not this jargon. Start the free reading if you want that format instead.
